MANZU' MUSEUM IN ARDEA
The world of Manzù, one of the most important contemporary Italian artists
The world of Manzù
Few people know that the municipality of Ardea hosts the collection of one of the most important contemporary Italian artists, Giacomo Manzoni, known as Manzù.
The “Giacomo Manzù” Museum is a space conceived and desired by the Bergamo sculptor and his wife Inge Schabel.
The Amici di Manzù Collection includes around ninety sculptures (of note: the “Cardinals” series, “Dance Step”, “Skater”, “Striptease”, “Lovers”), 330 graphic works (including drawings, engravings and theatrical sketches) and the preparatory bas-reliefs for the doors of the Cathedral of Salzburg and Rotterdam.
The Collection was inaugurated in 1969, all the works were donated by the Maestro to the Italian State in 1979, while the Museum was opened to the public in 1981.
Until early 2021, the artist was buried in the Museum's garden. After a legal battle between the Municipality of Ardea and his children Giulia and Mileto Manzoni, his body was removed from the tomb and, after being cremated, his ashes were interred in the family home, in the area now known as Colle Manzù.
On January 17, 2023, on the occasion of the 32nd anniversary of Manzù's death, two new acquisitions of the Museum were presented, "Girl on a Chair" and "Study for a Large Portrait of a Lady (Alice Lampugnani)".
“Living the Territory” is a project by “Viaggio o Son Desta?”.
